Students from Guluguba State School, in SE Queensland, visiting the Eastern Gas drill site in August. The students gained valuable insight into part of the gas industry that is all around them in their local area. The students have been learning about rocks and minerals, and what lies beneath the earths surface. By visiting the drill site they were able to make links to their recent studies and gain real world context within their local area.

We recently welcomed students and staff from Guluguba State School to Eastern Gas’s Venus-2H drill site, and their lovely thank-you messages have been a real highlight.

The visit brought their classroom lessons about rocks and minerals to life. Students explored the geology beneath their feet, peered down microscopes, watched the rig at work and saw a simulation of what happens below ground.

Their teacher made a point that really struck me: the gas industry is all around them in their local area, but they rarely get to see it up close.

That is why visits like this matter. They connect science with everyday life and help young people understand the oil and gas industry’s contribution to the energy we use, the products we rely on and the communities where we work. They also introduce the people, skills and technology behind it all.

The school newsletter praised the students’ thoughtful questions and exemplary behaviour. Their own reviews were equally good: “It was really cool getting to see the rig working.” And, of course, those rocks were a hit!

After a career in this industry, I still find the science fascinating. Knowing that a visit like this can spark that same curiosity in children is particularly rewarding. Perhaps a future geologist, engineer or scientist was among our visitors.
